OK, you’ll have to squint. Does it help if we tell you it’s a famous mug?
Not as in Owen Wilson famous, but it does have a big nose.
This is a picture of McKinley Rock, cut out in September, 1901 by a blast of dynamite. (They were building a narrow gauge railroad to Minden, West Virginia.) According to the story, workmen immediately recognized President McKinley’s profile in an upper portion of the cliff face. Later, they learned that the President had been assassinated that same day.
The rock was thereafter known as McKinley Rock. History buffs, you can find then and now pics and a comparison to the profile of the 25th President here.
This I-Spy was inspired by a certain retired raft guide, who tried to find McKinley Rock 23-odd years ago when he lived Thurmond, WV. He couldn’t find it then. After quite a bit of bushwhacking, he gave up.
This time, thanks to some directions and the season, he had better luck. Apparently Mr. McKinley can only be seen when the leaves are off the trees. To find him yourself, take the Rend Trail near Thurmond, WV. Hike about a mile and a half on the wide, flat trail until you reach a bench. The face is up on the left. No bushwhacking necessary.
