Time to grease up your chains. Spring is in the air!! We’ve culled a few tips for riding in unpredictable conditions.
♦ Stay off muddy trails.
♦ When it’s wet out, ride early in the morning or later in evening. The temperature is colder, but the ground is harder.
♦ For those who can afford a quiver of bikes: consider a fat bike with extra-wide wheels & tires. They’re easier to ride should you get into snow. And they create less impact on the trail.
♦ If you ride on snow with a regular bike, decreasing the amount of tire pressure can help you float.
♦ When riding in snow: use a light touch. Abrupt moves can break through crust on the snow & a sudden force on the pedals can make the rear tire break loose and spin. Keep the effort smooth and consistent.
♦ Carry your bike through wet areas if you can’t avoid them. Ruts are damage to the trails.
♦ Cycling speeds increase windchill. Gear recommendations: a thin ear band for chilly downhills, a skull cap under your helmet, a windproof jacket, and long fingered gloves.
♦ Hydrate, hydrate, hydrate—even in the cold.
♦ Bring your bike inside after a ride so it can dry completely & won’t freeze.
