Guiding’s not on CNN Money’s list of top 10 jobs in America, but most folks consider it the ultimate job if you can take the low pay and smile in all kinds of weather.
What are the best things about being a guide? We took an informal poll.
1. the outdoors is your office
2. being in the drivers seat (rafting)
3. going fast (zipline)
4. free lunch
5. meeting people
6. being the hero
7. introducing cityfolk to the great outdoors
8. bad jokes
9. fresh air work environs means it’s OK if you forget to shower once in awhile
10. a big tip and a toast at the end of the day
Cons? The same free lunch every day, early mornings, lifting rafts, scrapes and cuts and bruises from people falling on you (rafting), obnoxious people, sunburns, poison ivy, relatives who ask when you’re going to get a real job….
Life as a guide isn’t perfect, but it can be pretty good.
